B&W To Include 6 Year Labor Warranty On All Water Heaters Installed By B&W Starting 1/14/10

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

B&W Plumbing and Heating is pleased to announce that we are including a 6 Year Labor Warranty on all residential water heaters installed by B&W starting January 14, 2010.  Most manufacturers include a standard 6 Year Part and Tank Warranty and in the past B&W included a 2 Year Labor Warranty.  That meant that if a part or tank failed during Years 3 and 6 in your warranty, the part was covered, but the customer was still responsible for the labor. For Example, if in year 4 if the water heater leaked, the water heater was replaced under the 6 Year Tank Warranty, but the customer still had to pay for a plumber to install the replacement.

Now, with the new 6 Year B&W Labor Warranty, if you buy a water heater from B&W today and the tank fails 5 years from now, we will come in and replace the water heater at no cost to you.  You will be covered under the manufacturers 6 Year Part/Tank Warranty and B&W’s 6 Year Labor Warranty.

Residential Customers Only.

Is Your Water Heater Installed By A Licensed Plumber?

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009

When it is time to replace your water heater, keep on thing in mind:  The State of Indiana requires your water heater to be installed by a licensed plumber.

Indiana code (http://www.state.in.us/legislative/ic/code/title25/ar28.5/ch1.html) defines plumbing IC 25-28.5-1-2, unlawful acts IC 25-28.5-1-11 and violations IC 25-28.5-1-31 for plumber and contractors for the State of Indiana.  As defined, the water heater is a part of the plumbing supply system described in the code.

How can you check?  Indiana code IC 25-28.5-1-35 requires the corporate/contractor plumbing license to be displayed on all written and printed advertising for plumbing services.  This includes vehicles.  If you can’t find the information displayed, you can still check with the State of Indiana: http://www.in.gov/pla/license.htm, click ’search and verify,’ and look up plumbers, contractors or any profession in Indiana that requires a license.

So if you’re in the market for a new water heater, before you call an advertised ‘Handy Man’ or a Water Conditioning Company, call a licensed plumber.  It is the law.

Water Heater Warranties Simplified

Wednesday, April 8th, 2009

A lot of customers have called us wanting more information about the warranty on their current water heater.  Most brands of residential water heaters have six (6) year tank and a sin (6) year parts warranty.  This will vary with different models and manufacturers.  The labor warranty from the manufacurer is one (1) year, BUT if the water heater is purchased and installed by B&W Plumbing and Heating, then we will give the customer a two (2) year labor warranty from the date of installation.  Once the labor warranty has expired, the customer will have to pay for the labor for the part covered under warranty to be replaced.

Another thing to remember is that all warranty transactions use the original date of installation.  Example:  if the gas valve on a water heater fails after five (5) years and is replaced under a part warranty,  the new gas valve is not covered for another six (6) years.  The warranty for the new gas valve expires six (6) years fro the date of the original water heater installation.

If the water heater is a Whirlpool and was purchased a home center or hardware store, the part must be returned to the store where purchased for the part warranty to be honored.  We will be happy to remove/install any parts for the customer, but the customer will have to go to the store for the replacement parts.

Now lets talk tank warranty.  What a consumer first understand about residental gas tank water heaters is that there are two (2) types.  For lack of better terms, we call them “Old Design” and “New Design.”  Several years ago, a law was passed requiring all tank type gas water heaters produced after July 1, 2003 to incorporate a Flammable Vapors Ignition Resistance design so that the gas burners will not ignite flammable vapors from liquid spills in the vicinity of the water heater.  The manufacturers had already produced a large quantity of the “Old Style” water heaters before the deadline so they were still sold beyond the July 1, 2003 production deadline.  Any gas water heater produced after that date are the “New Design.”

If a tank leaks or fails with any “New Design” gas water heater and it is still in warranty,  the water heater can be replaced under the tank warranty.  If the labor warranty has expired, the home owner will still have to pay for installation for their replacement water heater.  The replacement water heater’s warranty date is still six (6) years from the original water heater’s installation date, not the replacement date.  Example:  If the homeowner’s “New Design” gas water heater tank fails after four (4) years,  a replacement water heater will be installed, the customer will pay for installation, and the balance of the warranty remaining will be two (2) years.

If the tank leaks or fails with any “Old Design” gas water heater and it still has a tank warranty, then the homeowner can replace the the water heater replaced under warranty.  The homeowner will have to pay for installation and an upgrade charge for the “New Design” water heater.  The good new in this scenario is that with the upgrade charge, the the water heater’s warranty will extend another six (6) years.  The upgrade charge varies by manufacturer.  Example:  If the homeowner’s “Old Design” gas water heater tank fails after four (4) years,  a replacement water heater will be installed, the customer will pay for installation and an upgrade charge, and the balance of the warranty remaining will be six (6) years.
